Preparing for the CLT:
Your Complete Guide

In this Guide, you’ll learn about:
Options for Test Prep
1. CLT Online Practice Tests
If you have signed up to take the CLT, you should have an account that you can use to login to CLTexam.com. There are 3 free practice tests that you can use to prepare for the test.
Pros:
This is real CLT material written by the same people who wrote the questions you will take on test day!
It’s free and super easy to use.
(You can also take these tests when you use CLT Prep!)
Cons:
It’s difficult to know what you should improve on – and how to improve on it – when you just take practice tests.
You won’t have any guidance for picking a strategy or learning the material you need to know in order to improve your score.
In our opinion, it is difficult to learn from question explanations, which would be your primary source of information; the explanations are extremely technical and specific to the question, rather than giving a general understanding of the material that helps you prepare for the next time you see a similar question.
2. CLT Student Guide
This is the CLT’s prep book, similar to the ACT’s Red Book, which contains 3 practice tests.
Pros:
There are 3 different practice tests that are also written by the CLT.
You can combine this option with the CLT’s online practice tests mentioned above to have access to 6 official practice tests.
It’s very easy to practice using these tests and might be a good option if you enjoy using paper instead of or in addition to online material!
Cons:
Same as the CLT online practice tests, it’s difficult to know what you should improve on – and how to improve on it – when you just take practice tests.
3. Other Test Prep Companies
The CLT has other test prep providers listed on their website – only a few companies provide test prep for the CLT!
We encourage you to find the best fit for you!
4. CLT Prep
CLT Prep’s online program can be completed in 5 weeks, and you will have access to the course for 6 months when you purchase the Study Guide!
Here’s exactly how you’ll be prepared for the CLT using CLT Prep:
CLT Prep’s Approach
1. Understanding the Test
For each section, we help you determine your strategy, recognize the types of questions you are answering, and learn how to approach each individual question type.
The CLT emphasizes critical thinking – which really means solving problems that you haven’t seen before – more than other standardized tests.
Here’s the problem: it’s difficult to think critically when you don’t even know what you’re supposed to be thinking about.
Some students don’t understand Analogies on the CLT (a question type), some don’t understand what the CLT means by “Conciseness and Clarity” (another question type), and some don’t understand Logic Game questions.
They can’t “think critically” about these problems, because they don’t even know where to start.
That’s where Understanding the Test comes in. We explain every single question type on the CLT, what it is asking, and how you can approach that question type to get it right every time.
You can think of this section of CLT Prep as “tips and tricks” that unlock your ability to think critically.
2. Learn More Material
Tips and tricks alone won’t get the job done.
Next, you need to learn Real Material – like how to use commas, semicolons, and parallel structures – in order to maximize your score.
This section is where we go over actual school material that you need to know in order to succeed on the CLT.
We discuss finding True, False, Relevant, and Irrelevant Answer Choices on Verbal Reasoning questions, Grammar concepts like the ones listed above (and more), Writing rules that you MUST know in order to succeed on Writing questions, as well as Algebra, Geometry, and Logic skills that will help you on test day.
3. Practice, Practice, Practice
Finally, we have Full Length Practice Tests and shorter, bite-sized quizzes that reinforce what you learn.
In total, you will take over 700 practice questions so that you’re ready for everything you will see on test day!
How does CLT Prep work?
There are 3 studying options:
- Self-Paced Online Study Guide
- Study Guide + Online Group Tutoring Sessions
- Study Guide + 1:1 Online Tutoring
Self-Paced Online Study Guide
The self-paced online study guide contains all of the online material that CLT Prep has and gives you a personalized Path to Success on the CLT.
Your Path to Success prioritizes the material you need to learn in order to maximize your score!
Already doing well in Algebra? Then Algebra will NOT be prioritized. You’re still free to take all of the Algebra material, but you don’t HAVE to!
Study Guide + Online Group Tutoring
In addition to the self-paced study guide, this option gives you access to three online group tutoring sessions each week.
You can join and leave these meetings as you please and come to as many sessions as you would like to!
Ask questions that you need to know the answer to in order to be prepared for the CLT and listen to other students’ questions so you can learn from them!
Study Guide + 1-on-1 Online Tutoring
In addition to the online study guide, a tutor will help you understand the material, review practice questions, and answer your questions in a 1 on 1, online tutoring session.
You get two, 45-minute sessions per week for 6 weeks when you purchase this option!
The CLT Prep Guarantee
If you finish 90% of your Path to Success (discussed in the section above), CLT Prep guarantees that you will increase your CLT score by at least 5 points!
If you do not increase your score by at least 5 points, you will receive a FULL refund.
If you have not taken the CLT before, you can take a full CLT diagnostic test in order to establish your score!
